Nuclear weapons: 10 years illegal
Bombspotters close 10 places in Belgium due to war crimes

Today, 8th July 2006, is exactly 10 years since the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the highest court in the world, issued an advisory opinion on the question: “Are nuclear weapons in contravention of International Law?” For the past 10 years it has been clear that all existing nuclear weapons are illegal. However, there are still United States nuclear weapons based in Belgium, at the NATO airbase of Kleine Brogel.

Bombspotting 2006

The Bombspotting campaign is looking for international support for the next phase in our campaign for the global abolition of nuclear weapons. We focus our campaign on the withdrawal of the US nuclear weapons from Europe, and the end of NATO’s nuclear weapons strategy, and we try to link the specific role of nuclear weapons to the role of the military in the processes of globalisation.

Concretely, we are now looking for groups who wish to take part in an international complaint action against NATO nuclear weapons in November 2006, and groups who can mobilise people to come to our action conference and alternative NATO summit in Brussels on 25th November 2006. The international complaint action and the alternative NATO summit will run in parallel with the official NATO summit of November 28th-29th in Riga, Latvia, where NATO leaders will meet to discuss the new strategic concept of the North-Atlantic Alliance.

18th-24th November 2006: International NATO Complaint Action

Just before the NATO summit in Riga, we are calling for an international complaint action to place the issue of nuclear weapons on the official agenda of NATO member states, as well as countries debating NATO-membership. The model of action that we are proposing is a “Complaint Day”, which will involve groups of people around Europe making an official complaint against their government’s role in the illegal NATO nuclear weapons strategy, for example by filing an official complaint at their local police station. We leave it up to participating groups how they locally organise this action, but ask to do the action in the week of 18th-24th November.

We will hire a bailiff to deliver a summons to the NATO Secretary General in Brussels on 24th or 27th November and/or to the Heads of State in Riga on 28th or 29th November. This summons officially states the elements of humanitarian law NATO nuclear policy is violating, will refer to the complaints being made the week before, and point to their legal duty to change the policy.

25th November 2006: International action conference and alternative NATO Summit

This European action conference and alternative summit will be a chance for anti-nuclear groups and groups opposed to NATO’s militarised globalisation to meet each other, and plan common campaigns and actions for the coming months and years. It will take place shortly before the NATO summit scheduled for November 2006, where the NATO heads of state will meet to discuss the reform of NATO.

Temporary Committee puts withdrawal of nuclear weapons on NATO agenda
Foreign Minister De Gucht replaced for one day due to irrelevance

24/11/2005 - Due to the fact that Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Karel De Gucht, has made himself irrelevant in the debate on nuclear weapons, he has been replaced today by a temporary committee, that has immediately placed the withdrawal of nuclear weapons, and the scrapping of nuclear weapons from NATO strategy, on the NATO agenda. A statement announcing this has already been sent to the NATO Ambassadors of our NATO allies. The change in policy was announced during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and on the website www.foreignministry.be

Nuclear weapons and Bombspotting: an update

At the Belgian level the nuclear weapon campaign continues to bring some steps forward. There have been resolutions in the Belgian Senate and House of Representatives, asking for the withdrawal of US nuclear weapons from Europe. Our government remains completely unresponsive. Belgium did not even support the German proposal to put the withdrawal of nuclear weapons on the NATO agenda.

Nuclear weapons have been featuring on the international political agenda. Unfortunately the discussion has not dealt with the dismantling of the thousands of already existing nuclear weapons, but only with the possibility that Iran would make nuclear weapons. "That must be avoided at all cost", and as far as Bush is concerned, we can take this literally.
